About Subtitle Overlap Detector
Ever watched a video where two subtitles appear on top of each other, one subtitle disappears too quickly, or the timing feels completely wrong? Subtitle timing problems are surprisingly common, especially when subtitles are created, converted, translated, or edited manually.
That's exactly why we built Subtitle Overlap Detector. This tool scans your subtitle file and identifies timing problems that can make subtitles difficult to read or cause two subtitle entries to appear simultaneously.
What Does Subtitle Overlap Mean?
A subtitle overlap happens when one subtitle is still being displayed while the next subtitle has already started.
For example, if subtitle #10 runs from 00:01:20,000 to 00:01:23,000 and subtitle #11 starts at 00:01:22,000, the two subtitles overlap for one second.
Depending on the video player, this can cause subtitles to appear on top of each other, replace each other unexpectedly, or produce confusing reading experiences.
What This Tool Detects
- Subtitle timing overlaps
- Invalid subtitle timestamps
- Subtitles with zero duration
- Subtitles where the end time comes before the start time
- Very short subtitles
- Very long subtitles
- Large gaps between subtitle entries
- Duplicate subtitle text
- Subtitle entries that may require manual review
Supported Subtitle Formats
The tool is primarily designed for common text-based subtitle formats.
- SRT — SubRip Subtitle
- VTT — WebVTT
- TXT files containing SRT/VTT-style subtitles
- Copied and pasted subtitle text
How to Use Subtitle Overlap Detector
- Upload your subtitle file.
- Or paste your subtitle text into the text box.
- Click Analyze Pasted Subtitles if you pasted text.
- The tool automatically scans the subtitle timings.
- Review the detected problems.
- Click an issue to jump to the corresponding subtitle.
- Use the timeline to visually inspect subtitle timing.
- Fix the timestamps in your subtitle editor.
- Run the detector again to verify the corrected file.
Overlap Detection
The detector compares neighboring subtitle entries based on their start and end times. When the next subtitle begins before the previous subtitle has finished, the tool calculates the approximate overlap duration.
The overlap amount is shown directly in the subtitle table, making it easy to identify the entries that require attention.
Very Short Subtitles
A subtitle that appears for only a fraction of a second may technically be valid but still be extremely difficult for viewers to read. The tool therefore allows you to define a minimum subtitle duration.
The default minimum is 0.8 seconds, but you can change this value depending on your subtitle workflow.
Very Long Subtitles
Subtitles that remain on screen for an unusually long time can also indicate a timing problem. The detector lets you define a maximum duration and highlights entries that exceed it.
Large Subtitle Gaps
Not every gap is an error. Sometimes there is simply no dialogue. However, unexpectedly large gaps can indicate a missing subtitle entry or an incorrectly timed subtitle.
The detector therefore treats large gaps as warnings rather than automatically declaring them errors.
Duplicate Subtitle Detection
Duplicate subtitles can happen when subtitles are accidentally copied, imported twice, or incorrectly converted between formats. The detector compares normalized subtitle text and identifies repeated entries for manual review.
Visual Subtitle Timeline
The timeline provides a quick visual overview of how subtitles are distributed throughout the video. Each subtitle is represented by a timeline block, while overlapping entries receive additional highlighting.
Click any timeline block to jump directly to that subtitle in the results table.
Search and Filtering
Large subtitle files can contain thousands of entries. Instead of manually scrolling through everything, you can search subtitle text, subtitle numbers, or timestamps.
You can also filter the results to show only overlaps, invalid entries, short subtitles, long subtitles, large gaps, or duplicate subtitles.
Subtitle Quality Checks
Subtitle timing is only one part of subtitle quality, but it is an important one. A subtitle file with clean timing is easier to read, easier to edit, and generally behaves better across different video players.
Is It Really Free?
Yes, you can use the tool for free with reasonable usage limits.
Free users get 10 queries per day for personal use. This is useful for checking subtitles for movies, videos, tutorials, social media content, educational projects, and other personal projects.
If you regularly process a large number of subtitle files or use the tools for professional or commercial work, Premium provides unlimited access and commercial usage rights.
Free vs Premium
| Free Users | Premium Users |
|---|---|
| ✔️ 10 queries/day | 🔓 Unlimited queries/day |
| ✔️ Personal use | 🔥 Commercial use allowed |
| ✔️ Browser-based processing | 🚀 Priority processing |
| ✔️ Subtitle analysis features | ⭐ Unlimited access to tools |
| ❌ No commercial license | ✔️ Commercial license |
Privacy Friendly
Your subtitle text is processed directly in your browser by the JavaScript running on this page. The detector does not need to upload your subtitle file to a server to analyze its timing.
This is especially useful when working with unpublished videos, private projects, client subtitles, educational content, or other material that you don't want to send to an external service.
Useful for Content Creators
- YouTubers
- Video editors
- Subtitle translators
- Caption creators
- Film makers
- Course creators
- Podcast creators
- Social media creators
- Localization teams
- Students and teachers
Useful for Subtitle Translation
Subtitle translation can sometimes change the amount of text or require timing adjustments. After translating an SRT or VTT file, running it through an overlap detector can help identify timing mistakes introduced during the editing process.
Report Export
After analyzing your subtitles, you can copy the complete diagnostic report or download it as a text report. A CSV export is also available when you need to inspect subtitle timing information in spreadsheet software.
Limitations
- Overlap detection does not automatically rewrite your subtitle file.
- Large gaps are warnings and are not necessarily errors.
- Reading speed and linguistic quality require additional checks.
- Some advanced subtitle formats may require manual review.
- Very large subtitle files may take longer to analyze on slower devices.
- Free usage is limited to 10 queries per day.
